This amazing place is the home of an active volcano. The center of the island sank into the sea during a terrible eruption about 3500 years ago. This caused tidal waves which destroyed the advanced civilization of Minoan Crete, 70 miles (112.6 km) to the south. Experts have discovered traces of this eruption as far as the Nile Delta in Egypt. Some scientists believe that the island is part of the legendary lost continent of Atlantis.
